There is a letter in the Qur’an
A centuries-old secret,
Passed down from mouth to ear
And day to century, and again
Remaining a secret now, forever
I won’t reveal, can’t reveal
Which one it is, don’t know
The arcane mix of letters or what
Constellation of moods and stars
Unlocked that hidden gate
The sages thought it would open
A window to the real world
Beyond the wall of sensation
A man would sing it they said
Of course they thought it a man
Witness to hidden holy truth
That morning though I sang
With the chorus of birds outside
Adding sacred verse to the mix
Our rounded honey-voices sinking
Down into the depths of rock
And hovering high to the heavens
A crack opened in the edifice
Of the ordinary, the everyday
A strange little sprout sprung up
Probed the room, like a neophyte
Visiting from an alien world
Then it shrunk back to its hole
Uneasy silence fell, then rumbling
They came rushing in like water
A rainbow geyser shooting forth
Those divine things, illuminated
Rampaging through the world, and
Rearranging the atomic angels
They gathered in swarms, those cosmic
Buzzing bees, millions of millions
They shaped a new sun, that cast
A new light with unknown intensities
And heat that baked the tired earth
Exquisite shoots sprouted there
And reveled and waved their
Liberated arms in the brilliance of day
The old earth and the old humanity
They didn’t really ever pass away
They merely got folded in freshly
Kneaded into a newborn world.
