A/THEOGONY

A hundred thousand and twenty four more
Gather in depths of soil and sky
Gods fled the rupture’s darkening odds
Conceal themselves from the sultan’s eye

The first walls raced across the terrain
Cleft the earth and split the lands
Wrangling green gods in rigid lines
And animal gods in prison bands

We must take action the sun lords cried
Prevent the spread of this dreaded curse
There is no hope, a stone god dissents
The breach in the world can only grow worse

Our kind are bound in unyielding cells
And there they’ll fall into bottomless doubt
Forget the void and the gathering all
The sultan’s control they’ll help bring about

The blocks will spread to every clime
And higher and taller they’ll fill up the sky
Eclipsing the sun and all of the stars
There’ll be no choice but for all to comply

The death pods will dig deep into the earth
And spread beneath like noxious roots
To nourish the forces corroding above
Till all comes undone, its calamitous fruits

But what of our brethren the sun gods wailed
Who cling to life and the memory of bliss
What portal remains through which they can pass
And repose once more in this holy abyss

Their hearts are foreclosed, a river god said
The light of absence can’t enter their scope
But we have to attempt, another complained
We’re not the kind to abandon all hope

What if we constructed, a cloud god began
A doorway opening into this space
Or a window assembled to give them a view
Remind them of absence, their original face

With this they agreed, the general group
And set to building the wondrous gate
A towering hulk in the sultan’s form
A king who decrees through his pen and his slate

With reason and will he sits on a Throne
They each played a part in perfecting his shape
But buried within was a stunning surprise
The portal that opened delusion’s escape

The trick was set in a clearing so vast
In the midst of this God they hid it away
The center a cipher where emptiness rules
Around which the gods form their playful array

This gate they assembled, they called it Allah
The voice of the all and the essence of none
With Five they adorned it encircling high
Till the sultan’s constraints are finally undone.
